It seems that we have not internalized the lessons from George Orwell's dystopian vision in "1984." Now, forty years later, this frightening notion becomes reality. The year 2024 is not a dystopian fiction but an urgent warning: we must resist the plans of governments and powerful corporations that threaten our freedom.
While digitalization offers incredible opportunities for humanity, it also carries dangers. It is our duty to ensure that no one - whether intentionally or unintentionally - abuses digitalization as a modern shackle. A shackle that forces us onto the benches of a penal gallery, where we are left with no choice but to row until we drop dead, all while being monitored at every moment.
This ubiquitous surveillance and control allows for immediate detection and punishment of any wrongdoing or political opinion, making the thought of resisting the system unthinkable.
It is time to fight together for a just, free, and democratic future, where digitalization does not subjugate us, but serves us and supports us in our pursuits of happiness and self-actualization.
Philosophical Framework
In "1984," only the party members are subjected to total surveillance - yet in the real world, communism, Stasi or not, ultimately failed. In modern 2024, however, EVERYONE is monitored.
Winston Smith in "1984" lives with the awareness of ubiquitous surveillance and begins to become reckless - while his son Winnie in 2024 is completely SURPRISED by the all-encompassing control.
In the dystopian "1984," Winston Smith is always aware of the pervasive surveillance - in the year 2024, however, Winnie is completely UNAWARE of how extensively he is being monitored!
George Orwell depicted a grim, future world in "1984." I, on the other hand, portray a reality that will enslave people and imprison them in a way that could only be escaped at a great cost of blood, within a few years - not decades, but merely years.
While Winston Smith represents a rather tragic figure from the beginning, Winnie is a successful graduate of an elite university, who can still unleash his potential. That was something Orwell could not foresee. If the Nazis had remained in power, if Stalin had succeeded, we would have awakened in a 1984 as well. Fortunately, democracy has triumphed.
Unfortunately, however, we seem to be increasingly forgetting the value of democracy as we live in a world of casino capitalism, where a few individuals control the system thanks to arbitrarily generated money.
The power of these predatory capitalists, who are subservient to the dogma of shareholder value, is beginning to crumble, as the monetary system, much like a pyramid scheme, collapses in on itself. Surveillance and control are viewed as the only solutions to this dilemma - and thus "1984" becomes reality!
